Event Recap: Long Live The King! Q-tip's Tribute to MJ at the Nokia Theatre
Allthatsfab was in the building last night for Q-Tip's tribute to Michael Jackson at the Nokia Theatre. DJ Spinna and Mark Ronson joined Tip on the turntables and had the crowd going absolutely bananas to MJ hits from 10pm to 4 in the morning!
Q-tip was blowing a whistle, doing his thing on the turntables, skipping around the stage, moonwalking, doing the robot--he was doing the most, and the crowd loved it.
It was funny because nobody really knew what to expect last night. Many people were confused as to if this event was a concert? Was Q-tip hosting a show? Were there going to be live performances? Nobody had a clue, but most Q-Tip fans know that if he's doing an event it's going to be poppin'.
When we walked into the theater we noticed that the stage was set up with a bunch of turntables and huge posters of a youngMichael Jackson sitting on a throne. The event was basically a huge party---people having fun, dancing, drinking, and enjoying classic music from the Jackson 5, Janet Jackson, and MJ. Overall, it the event can best be described as a night out at Santos Party House on steroids.
During the peak of the party, singer/songwriter, Marsha Ambrosius, (formerly of Floetry) got on the mic and did an impromptu performance of Michael Jackson's hit, "Butterflies". For those that don't know, she actually wrote the song. Crazy! Check out the video:
Q-Tip also took the time out to call Michael Jackson's good friend and mentor, Quincy Jones, and let the whole crowd hear his convo:
And of course, there were some celebrity guests in the building as well paying tribute to MJ.
Grandmaster Flash and Angie Martinez were seen on the stage
Stephen Hill was hanging out in the crowd.
It was no surprise to see the Retro Kidz doing their thing on the dance floor. We love these guys.
We didn't spot Solange in the crowd. She was probably hiding backstage the entire time. But that hair-do and that outfit. We love it, girl.
And Martine (AllThatsFab), cheesing of course. Should have put the drinks down for the picture :-/.
Good times.
