The Queen Gave Prince Harry and Meghan Markle One Heck of a Wedding Present

On May 19, there was one rule for anyone attending the royal wedding: no gifts. The 600 guests were asked not to bring the couple any presents, and any presents sent from people around the world to the palace are being returned. There is one gift, however, that the couple will be keeping: a gift from Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. And it's a doozy.

It's royal protocol for the newlyweds to decline most gifts. They won't accept any gifts that might give anyone the idea that they are obligated to anyone. Besides that, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex don't really need anything. They have each other, and each of them are already wealthy.

That's why, in leiu of gifts, Harry and Meghan released a list of charities and asked people to donate instead of giving them presents.

Still, royals are allowed to accept personal gifts from family members, and there is one gift from the Queen that is amazing. Harry's grandmother gifted him and his new bride York Cottage, a luxurious historic cottage on her Sandringham Estate.

The cottage was built by built by Edward VII in 1893. He gave it to his son, George the V, before he was king. George is also known as the Duke of York, and that's how the cottage got its name.

The cottage was once nicknamed 'the bachelor’s cottage', and it was furnished by King George himself. Many have said this is why the decor appears a little eccentric, especially by today's standards. Queen Elizabeth inherited it from her father.

It is not unusual for a newly married prince and his bride to be gifted with property by the king and/or queen. Her Majesty gave Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton, Anmer Hall when they were married. The Georgian country home in Norfolk is only about 2 miles away from Sandringham. It was built in the 18th century and received a refacing in 1815.

William and Kate spent nearly $2 million renovating it, putting in a new roof, new kitchen , and adding a conservatory. They also completely redecorated the inside, and had some extensive landscaping done. A number of new trees were planted around the property to give the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their children more privacy.

York cottage has been used by the royal family as a holiday home, as well as a central office for Sandringham. Harry and Meghan will likely be doing some renovations to personalize their new vacation home as well, but it looks like a vacation home is all it will be for now.

The couple won't be living at York Cottage, according to reports from the palace. Most likely, they will continue to live in Nottingham Cottage, the quaint cottage they share that is on the grounds of Kensington Palace in London. The cozy cottage is about 1,324 square feet with two bedrooms, and is perfect for Harry and Meghan right now, at least until they decide to start growing their family.

Harry and Meghan also reportedly rent a house in the Cotswolds. It's been referred to as their 'love nest'. The Cotswold property is expected to be used as a country retreat for weekends. It appears as though they’ll also be keeping this residence for the time being.
