Jessica Biel And Justin Timberlake Already Started Sex Education For Their 2-Year-Old Son

Actress Jessica Biel says that she and her husband, Justin Timberlake, have already started teaching their son, Silas, about the birds and the bees. Specifically, at the 2018 MAKERS Conference in Los Angeles last week, the 35-year-old mom told the audience that the couple were teaching Silas about his own body.

"I have a two-and-a-half-year-old [and] we’re starting [sexual education] now," the star said, according to People. "We’re using technical terms... we shower together, and [we say], 'This is what I’ve got. This is what you’ve got'."

"We just talk about it. I know it’s really young, but I really believe that if you start this early, there’s no shame," said the mom.

Biel and Timberlake aren't the only parents who take this approach. Child psychologists have long encouraged parents not to be afraid to use the correct term for body parts, or to explain biological parts and functions to young children — to an extent.

The point is to keep the lines of communication open so that the topic doesn't become taboo and embarrassing later. It also helps arm kids with accurate information.

The reason talks about human biology become so awkward later is because a lot of parents put it off for one big discussion. Instead, it's something that should be revealed in increments.

"In my counseling practice, rather than advocating for 'The Talk' I suggest that parents have many age-appropriate talks over the course of many years which takes into account specific topics," R. Scott Gornto, author and therapist, in an article for Psychology Today.

"For example, when your child is three to five years old, discuss the names for parts of the body. From ages five through eight, talk about where babies come from, conception, fetal development, and childbirth.”

“From ages eight through eleven, discuss topics like sexual intercourse, including boundaries, puberty, a woman’s menstrual cycle, pornography, and sexual abuse. From ages eleven through fourteen, have more dialogue about puberty, love, dating, and more complex questions about sexuality,” he explains, saying parents should adjust the discussion based on the child's maturity level.

"I don’t want to tell him, "Keep your private parts," and this and that," Biel continued. "It’s a beautiful thing. You have it and mine is different and it’s cool, man. We have to respect ourselves and respect each other. So I believe it starts really young."

Biel says her own sex education makes her feel more confident in being intimate. She says it's nice to just be able to tell the truth.

"I feel confident to say, 'You know what? I’m not feeling it,' or, 'This doesn’t feel good" or, "I like this', And I think that takes a long time,” she admits.

The former '7th Heaven' star says that as an adult, she's always seeking to expand her 'sexual IQ'.

Motherhood taught her a lot. She says of pregnancy experience, "No one tells you what happens,” she says of maternal healthcare. “You prepare for the day in terms of having a baby [and] you have this baby, and then everyone’s like, ‘Bye, see you later! Good luck!’ There’s no care. There’s no, ‘How should I eat to prepare my body to produce milk and continue to produce milk?’”

When asked her best piece of advice about sex she's ever been given, she joked saying, "Don't do it in the ocean."
