Penelope Cruz Talks Near-Death Moment With Pal Salma Hayek While Dressed As Clowns

Celebrities seem so untouchable sometimes that it's hard to remember that they're people. Even with all their gifts and blessings, they can still suffer from tragic fates just like ordinary folk. One celebrity recently revealed a near-death experience she and a friend had, at a most untimely moment.

Penelope Cruz told People that one of the most terrifying things that ever happened to her was when she was on a plane that made an emergency landing. She was on the plane with her friend Salma Hayek, and about 100 other people, and for a little while it looked like they might be going down.

Making matters worse, both women were dressed in clown costumes at the time.

The 43-year-old actress shared the experience with People, though she notes that most people find it absurd and find it hard to believe.

"I had an emergency landing on Halloween day with my friend Salma and because it was Halloween we were dressed as clowns," she explains. "And I never liked clowns but after that experience, if you can even less. I cannot stand seeing a clown after that."

According to Cruz, she and Salma were on the flight with her father, Leo, and a lot of other guests when something went seriously wrong in the cabin. The plane was forced to make an emergency landing before reaching its destination.

"We were 100 people on that flight and thank God I'm here to tell you the story but it was crazy because we were all wearing costumes," The Vicky Cristina Barcelona actress explains. "It was really crazy, when I tell this story people think I'm making it up."

If Stephen King and John Wayne Gacy didn't turn Hayek and Cruz off to clowns, that flight definitely did the trick.

Cruz says it wasn't the first time she'd had a near death experience. She once went diving in Belize and, for a moment there, though she was not going to get back to the surface alive. She was deep in the water when she realized she was surrounded by predators.

"It was 40 meters deep and I was surrounded by sharks and I had narcosis, which is a very similar thing to a panic attack," she explains.

When she looked up she could see the surface above. She began praying that she would make it, and obviously, she did, thank goodness. She says she loves diving, but she’ll never go that deep again.

If Cruz is into method acting, then she may have been able to put these harrowing experiences to very good use in her latest film. Cruz is in 'Murder on the Orient Express', which many are hailing as the most faithful and exciting adaption yet to the Agatha Christie novel. The star-studded film also features Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley, Kenneth Branaugh, Dame Judy Dench, Michelle Pfeiffer, Tom Bateman, Josh Gad, Willem Dafoe and Leslie Odom Jr. The film opens in the U.S. on Friday.
