Al Gore Says Donald Trump's Effect On America's Worldwide Reputation Is Deliberate

President Trump’s actions are eroding the United States’ influence in its relations with other countries, according to Al Gore.

Time reported that the former vice president cited Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris climate accord as an example of the administration’s destructive policies. The pact, which virtually every country signed, calls for voluntary limits on the carbon emissions that climate scientists have determined cause global warming.

“I‘d hoped that he would come to his senses about the Paris agreement, but I was wrong,” Gore said Monday on NBC’s “Today” show. According to The Washington Times, he added: “The climate crisis is by far the most serious challenge we face, but he’s also undermined our alliances, such as NATO, and hurt our standing in the world in many ways. So, the months ahead will be a test for the American people. We’ve got to get through this. … We’ve never had a president who's deliberately made decisions the effect of which is tearing down America’s standing in the world.” It was not the first time that the Tennessee Democrat, one of the nation’s most prominent climate activists, has lashed out at Trump.

The president is a climate-change denier, having suggested that the concept is a Chinese hoax. His administration wasted little time after taking office to repeal regulations on polluters and promote major oil-pipeline projects. Trump has promised to bring back jobs in coal-mining regions. A month after last year’s election, the president spoke with Gore about climate change. They have had no subsequent meetings.

Time pointed out that, historically, Democrats are not the only politicians who have charged their opponents with harming U.S. interests. Newt Gingrich, a Republican speaker of the House in the 1980s, remarked that Barack Obama was “in many ways the first anti-American president.”

During the “Today” interview, Gore also weighed in on the growing scandal concerning the Trump campaign’s Russian connections. He described the recent revelation that Donald Trump Jr. met during the 2016 race with a Russian government lawyer who offered incriminating information about Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton as “some of the most troubling (news) we’ve seen in a while.”

The former vice president, who narrowly lost the 2000 presidential race to George W. Bush despite winning the popular vote, lamented that “our country is going through a challenging time for sure.” NBC host Willie Geist asked: “Have you spoken to Secretary Clinton since the election; commiserated at all about that?” Gore replied: “Yes I have. I suspect she’ll be fine, but our country, as I said earlier, is gonna face some challenging months ahead.”

Gore is promoting his newly released documentary, “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power.” The film updates his 2006 movie, “An Inconvenient Truth,” which featured the ex-VP explaining climate change. Gore went on a speaking tour, using charts and a slide show to educate Americans about the crises. The groundbreaking film, which raked in $24 million at U.S. box offices, won Oscars for Best Documentary Feature and Best Original Song. The movie earned $26 million in other countries around the world.
