Community Reacts To Bizarre Tragedy - Police Officer Shoots Woman Who Called For Assistance

An investigation is ongoing, but answers are a shortcoming when it comes to the bride who was shot dead by police in Minneapolis. The woman called to report a sexual assault in a nearby alley and went out in her pajamas to talk to police when one officer fired a bullet through the patrol car window and killed her.

The woman's fiancé says police have not yet explained why they killed the woman.

Justine Damond had moved from Australia to the U.S. to be with her fiancé, Don Damond, and plan her wedding. The 40-year-old bride-to-be heard what she believed was a sexual assault happening in an alley, and she called police.

When a patrol car got there, Damond, in her pajamas and unarmed, approached the driver-side window. Mohamed Noor, a 31-year-old police officer, was sitting in the passenger seat and fired a shot at Damond right through the window.

The shot hit Damond in the abdomen. According to reports, the officers jumped out of the car and began preforming CPR on the woman, but Damond died of the gunshot wound at the scene. No weapons have been recovered from the scene that might indicate Damond was a threat to the officers.

The incident happened so fast that the officers hadn't turned on their body cams, so there is no footage of the shooting.

Damond's death has been ruled a homicide and both officers have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation. Noor's partner, Officer Matthew Harrity, reportedly said that he was 'left stunned' by Noor's actions. Harrity had been driving the car that Damond was approaching.

According to Harrity, he was 'startled by a loud sound near' the patrol vehicle before Damond approached the officers, and then Noor fired shots out of the patrol car window at Damond. It still has not been revealed, however, what prompted Noor to fire the shot.

An unidentified white man, approximately 18 to 25 years old, was near the scene and watched officers administer CPR. Police are searching for him to see if he witnessed the shooting.

The mayor has vowed to get to the bottom of the shooting. "I have the same questions you do, and I seek the same answers you seek," said Mayor Betsy Hodges. "This process is difficult, but I want to be sure we get this right."

Justine's devastated parents and fiancé are also demanding answers.

"We thought yesterday was our worst nightmare but we awoke to the ugly truth and it hurt even more," said her father, John Ruszczyk.

"Justine, our daughter, was so special to us and so many others. We went down to Freshy (Freshwater) beach this morning and saw the blackness turn to light. Justine was a beacon to all of us, we only ask that the light of justice shine down on the circumstances of her death."

"Sadly, my family and I have been provided with almost no additional information from law enforcement regarding what happened after police arrived," said fiancé, Don. "We have lost the dearest of people and we are desperate for information."
