Megyn Kelly Challenges Biden To Defend His Past 'Language'

Television viewers who watched a recent episode of Megyn Kelly’s talk show were surprised when her interview with Joe Biden became a bit contentious, according to the website Jezebel.

The former vice president appeared on the program with his wife, Jill, to promote his newly published book. The interview proceeded without incident, as Kelly shared details about her family, as well.

Later, the host pressed Biden to reveal his plans regarding the 2020 presidential election. “Are you getting any closer?” she asked. He replied: “No. You shouldn’t run unless you can give your whole heart and soul. I’m not ready. There’s so much more to do. I’ve become a great respecter of fate. There’s a lot of really talented people out there in the Democratic Party.”

Kelly inquired, “Who?” which drew laughs from the crowd. After Biden argued that the party has many presidential prospects, his wife remarked: “I always have felt that Joe would make a great president. Always.”

When Kelly asked, “How do you think Melania Trump is doing as our first lady?” Jill Biden responded: “I think she’s doing great. She has grace. She shows poise. She’s interested in a lot of things. I know she’s trying to do a lot with military families, which means a lot to me and Joe.”

The discussion got more intense after Jill Biden left the stage. Kelly pointed out that while he was vice president, Biden once uttered “some controversial language including ‘barbarians at the gate’ when talking about Republicans.”

Biden fired back: “I wasn’t talking about Republicans,” prompting the host to recall: “Well, you were talking about labor unions … and you also said ‘they wanna put y’all back in chains,’ speaking about (2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt) Romney and the Republicans. And people said that’s divisive. Any regrets about the language you used?”

Biden explained: “Well, I regret occasionally using profanity. That’s what I regret. I really do. It’s inappropriate. But the context of each of those things that I talked about is there is a wholesale assault on the idea that people have — look, there used to be a basic bargain in our country, when in fact you contributed to the wellbeing of the enterprise you were part of, you got to share in the benefits. That’s been lost.”

“It’s not the principle; it’s the rhetoric that we’re talking about now,” Kelly said.

Biden, referring to President Trump’s use of Twitter to ridicule his critics, replied: “I would say those things again. That’s different than calling my opponent a little person; talking about their physical characteristics; all the stuff your mother would wash your mouth out for.

"If you attack somebody today, you usually go after their motive instead of their substance. … I have never attacked someone’s motive.”

Kelly pointed out that “both sides do this to each other; it’s not like the Democrats are without sin.” She cited Clinton’s description of Trump supporters as “deplorables.” Biden acknowledged that the rhetoric “has to change.”

Many political pundits consider the former vice president a front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, if he decides to run. He declined to throw his hat into the ring last year because he was still mourning his son’s death.
