POTUS Comes To Wife's Defense Over Hurricane Harvey High Heel Flap

When you’re the First Lady of the United States, people watch what you wear - and they’re not shy about sharing their opinions either. Whether that’s fair or not is irrelevant; it simply comes with the territory of the office. In the case of Melania Trump, she’s a particularly fashionable lady, so plenty of praise heads in her direction. However, there have been some missteps, including ones that led observers to blast her as out of touch.

As Glamour shares, one of the more memorable ones happened when the First Couple touched down in Texas to visit with the victims of Hurricane Harvey. Observers would quickly notice that FLOTUS was wearing high heels when she got off the plane, and all hell broke loose on social media. It got to the point that the designer of the shoes was reached for comment by Harper’s Bazaar.

"I don't think she's insensitive," said Manolo Blahnik. "I think she's working nonstop to make it work—possibly she was just wearing the shoes she left New York in. Yes, I think probably she could have worn Hunter boots, but she was wearing what she was wearing."

The commander-in-chief recently leapt to his wife’s defense during an interview with former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee.

"She goes and wants to look—out of respect for the White House—wants to look good leaving the front entrance to the White House. So she dresses up, she puts on formal shoes—high heels—and she leaves the White House going to Texas," he noted.

“Apparently, at the time she had sneakers with her so she could change into safer footwear when it was time to walk through the aftermath of the hurricane,” Glamour notes. “Trump goes on to mention that despite the flak his wife received, many of his supporters brought signs to a speech he gave that said they love Melania's stilettos.”

The outrage that flowed in Melania’s direction was way over the top. We can certainly understand a few eyebrows being raised, but it was being treated as if she had committed a cardinal sin. Such is life in the Trump era, but it’s also not the first time she’s been called out for questionable fashion choices that can be deemed to be a bit on the out of touch side.

“This isn't the first time the First Lady has been dragged because of her fashion choices. Recently she wore a $2,950 Delpozo dress when giving a speech addressing child hunger. Days after, she wore a somewhat impractical $1,380 Balmain shirt while gardening with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington,” Glamour adds. “And of course there was the time Donald Trump tweeted about the importance of American labor with a photo of his wife wearing an Italian-made dress.”

In a perfect world, we’ll assume that the First Lady has taken the criticism as constructive, and as a result, she’ll be more mindful of the image that’s conveyed by what she’s wearing. That being said, we’ll keep our fingers crossed that she’s not publicly flogged over future fashion choices.
