Women's Basketball Team Stands Trump Up: Refused Invitation To White House

The University of South Carolina women's basketball team is still celebrating their first NCAA championship, but the celebration won't be moved to the White House. When the White House extended an invitation to the team to join a reception with other college teams who won titles this year, the team had an interesting answer.

At first, the team's head coach, Dawn Stanley, said the team didn't get an invitation. In September, she told the Associated Press, "We haven’t gotten an invitation yet, and that in itself speaks volumes... We won before those other teams won their championships. I don’t know what else has to happen.”

Apparently, there had been some kind of oversight at the White House, which is inexcusable. Every NCAA women’s basketball championship team has been invited to the White House since 1983. But it seems someone in the Trump administration realized the mistake, and how poorly it reflects on the president. An invitation was cobbled together and extended quickly.

The team turned it down, though.

“We did hear from the White House about attending tomorrow’s event, but we will not be able to attend,” said Staley. “As I’ve been saying since our practices for this season started, all of our focus is on the season ahead. The only invitation we are thinking about is to the 2018 NCAA Tournament.”

It used to be an honor for a sports figure, team or even celebrity to be invited to the White House, regardless of party. Now, however, it seems more and more invitations are being turned down from people who just can't muster up enough support and respect for President Donald Trump.

The current POTUS isn't the first president to be snubbed, but never before had a president's invitations been snubbed so often.

Six players on the New England Patriots turned down an invitation from Trump after the team won the Super Bowl. Martellus Bennett, Devin McCourty, LeGarrette Blount, Chris Long, Dont'a Hightower and Alan Branch sat out the event because they felt that they had too many political differences with the president and his party.

In an unprecedented event, President Trump even snubbed an athlete. Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors star guard, was invited to a congratulatory reception. Curry and some other teammates were hesitant to accept the invitation in light of the political climate. Trump turned around and withdrew his invitation.

“Going to the White House is considered a great honor for a championship team. Stephen Curry is hesitating, therefore invitation is withdrawn!” the president tweeted.

LeBron James was one of Trump's harshest critics for his move. "U bum @StephenCurry30 already said he ain't going! So therefore ain't no invite. Going to White House was a great honor until you showed up!" he wrote.

After the controversy with the NFL, with Trump saying players who take a knee during the anthem should be fired, it'll be interesting to see if the White House gets many pro athlete visitors this year.
