Ivanka Trump: Reform Immigration Laws To Protect 'Innocent People'

Ivanka Trump is urging Congress to come up with “a good solution” for undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children.

The “first daughter” was asked about the issue because her father’s administration has threatened to repeal the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which has blocked the deportation of nearly 800,000 of the so-called “Dreamers.” Former President Obama created the program with an executive order.

The Daily Mail reported that Ivanka Trump, an unpaid assistant to the president with an office in the West Wing, remarked Monday during a panel discussion at Fortune magazine’s Most Powerful Women Summit: “I personally am of the opinion, the president has stated this, that we have to figure out a good solution that protects these innocent people.” She argued that phasing out DACA should not be “bandaged over at the presidential level through another executive order that can be rescinded by a subsequent administration.”

The president’s eldest daughter agreed that comprehensive immigration reform “is the right approach because our system is flawed, and it is not equipped to handle the challenges.” She added: “(The) visa program is deeply flawed. We’re not retaining the best talent for the jobs that we need, and that has to fundamentally be reconsidered.” Two CEOs, Deloitte’s Cathy Englebert and Lockheed Martin’s Marillyn Hewson, also appeared on the panel.

President Trump promised his supporters during the 2016 campaign that he would crack down on illegal immigration. He pledged to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, deport all of the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants living illegally in the United States, and ban Muslims from entering the country. After failing to achieve any of the goals, he had Attorney General Jeff Sessions announce that DACA would be phased out within six months.

Trump later amended the administration’s policy, advising Congress to save the immigration system by reforming it. On Sunday, he told lawmakers that he would be open to preserving DACA if they agree to finance the border wall, provide money for additional Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, and implement regulations to reduce the number of foreign children being brought into the country.

The two top-ranking Democrats on Capitol Hill, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer of New York and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California, were quick to react. In a joint statement, they called Trump’s stipulations “anathema to the Dreamers, to the immigrant community and to the vast majority of Americans.”

The Daily Mail cited reports that Ivanka Trump has been seen at the Capitol in recent days, lobbying for an increase in the $1,000 child tax credit. The proposal is part of her father’s tax-reform plan, which would give large tax breaks to corporations and the wealthy. “A significant expansion of the child tax credit will help parents have more money at a time in their lives when they need it the most and give them the flexibility to make the best choices regarding their families’ care,” the first daughter told The Associated Press. She also is advocating more STEM education and workforce development.
