Woman's Years Of Gel Manicures Cause Nails To Turn Red, Itch

Gel manicures seemed to be a godsend for many women. They looked better than regular nail polish manicures and lasted much longer.

Women could save a lot of money on nail salon trips by simply choosing gel. Like the old warning says, however, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

There are downsides to gel manicures that can mean real health risks. Is your nail polish worth it?

Valentina Todoroska was a huge fan of gel manicures, reports Mamamia.com. She used to not be able to justify frequent trips to the salon to keep her polish looking fresh and unchipped, so she would do her nails at home.

She found this option also required a bit of an investment, both in money and in time. Gel manicures actually saved both - she could get her nails done at a salon, and it would last two weeks - much longer than traditional nail polishes lasted.

“Like many other women, when the new nail technology became available, its positive attributes meant I was well and truly converted," Todoroska said.

After three years of getting gel manicures and pedicures on a regular basis, Todoroska noticed that her nail beds were turning red - bright red. Soon after the reddening, her nails started itching.

“Almost instantly they began to itch uncontrollably. I don't think I can adequately describe the level of itch I was dealing with on both my hands and feet.

As I continued to have my manicures and pedicures, roughly a day or two after, the itching would get worse and worse, going from bad to excruciating,” she explained to Mamamia.

Todoroska's doctor confirmed that she had, indeed, developed an allergy to the product. After she stopped using it, her nails returned to normal.

Many other women have come forward to say that they're developing allergies after regularly having gel nail manicures.

In addition to allergies, health experts warn that gel manicures have other dangers. They contain what is known as the 'toxic trio': toluene, formaldehyde and dibutyl phthalate. These known carcinogens are not only harmful to women but can be toxic to unborn children.

Gel manicures help promote bacteria and fungus in the nail bed because they block oxygen. If water seeps in through a crack, or when the polish begins to lift, it can cause some unsightly nail problems.

Worst of all perhaps is the fact that the only way to harden gel nail polish is with a UV light. These lights test up to four times stronger than the UV rays of the sun. The lights alone put women at higher risk for cancer.

While the old-school manicures might seem less exciting these days, for many women concerned about health issues, it's a better option. They may smell, they may chip more frequently, and they may not look as great - but at least they're not toxic enough to cause allergies or cancer.
