Heated Family Argument Over President Donald Trump Results In Teen Getting Shot

A family in Florida were having a birthday party that was supposed to bring everyone together, but a heated argument resulted in a shooting. The family got into a nasty political argument about President Donald Trump, and what he's done to help Puerto Rico since Hurricane Maria destroyed the small U.S. territory. A 17-year-old girl ended up getting shot.

Deltona police got the call that there was a domestic violence incident at a family home during a birthday celebration. The incident occurred at the home of 41-year-old Jose Amaro. During a birthday party, Amaro got into a political discussion with his brother-in-law, an unnamed 41-year-old man.

The two brothers in law began arguing about President Trump and the situation in Puerto Rico. Amaro was becoming irate. He then got up and shoved the other man, and went inside the house for a minute. When he returned, he had a handgun on him.

Party attendees tackled Amaro when he came out with the gun, but he managed to fire off a shot before being restrained. Amaro missed his brother-in-law, but hit his own 17-year-old stepdaughter, who was not involved in the argument. She was hit in the right knee.

Amaro remained on the scene when police arrived and as the girl received medical treatment. Police ran a background check on Amaro and found he had two felony convictions in New Jersey.

Police arrested Amaro and charged him with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon and two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He currently remains in jail without bail.

The teen was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

There's no word on whether the shooter was a Trump supporter or resister.

"All parties involved had been drinking and appeared intoxicated,” said an official statement released by the sheriff’s department. “The argument escalated, and Amaro became angry, shoved his brother-in-law, went inside the house and grabbed a handgun.”

Disagreement over President Trump seems to be the cause of much family strife. One couple got divorced after the election because the woman says she could not stay with a husband who voted for Trump.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll found this couple wasn't alone. Some 13 percent of responders admitted to ending a relationship because they disagreed with the other person about Donald Trump.

One woman admits that, after the election, she stopped talking to her parents for weeks because they voted for Trump. One brother and sister in New York stopped talking after the election because they each voted for a different candidate.

Many people are dreading going home for the holidays this year. With all the political division in the country, that division is putting a wedge in families in which both conservatives and liberals used to co-exist. It might be a good year to hide the bullets, use plastic cutlery, and avoid political talk at all costs.
