Man Found Coatless Child At Playground On Cold Night, Stepped In To Help - Discovered A Tragedy

A young man in Utah decided to head down to the local community center to shoot some hoops and get some exercise. Night had already fallen, so he was surprised to see a little girl playing alone in a park across the street; she wasn't dressed for the cold and had no supervision.

Thankfully, the Good Samaritan went to help the little girl. What police found was a heartbreaking tragedy, however.

Marcus King says he heard the 4-year-old girl calling out from a playground near the Marshall White Community Center in Ogden. She was playing in the snow, on the playground equipment, but wasn't dressed for the weather and temperatures were near freezing.

King knew something was wrong.

“She didn’t have any jacket, no shoes, no parental supervision, and just took action then and took her inside,” he said.

The staff contacted the local police, who came and handled the matter. King, worried about the little girl, stayed close for three hours.

She could have frozen to death if someone hadn't found her, or she could have been found by the wrong person and ended up the victim of a crime. Everyone worried that the parents could have been abusive or neglectful.

Finally, officers were able to find out why the tot was out alone at night in the cold.

The little girl tried to explain to them that her mother was asleep and wouldn't wake up for a long time. She was able to lead them to her home across the street from the park.

“When they walked over there, the door was wide open," King said. "And the way the little girl was explaining it was her mom wasn't paying attention, and her mom was on the floor sleeping."

When police arrived they found the girl's mother wasn't sleeping, or even unconscious. She had passed away.

The reason behind the death is unknown but it's believed to have been due to a medical condition. The mother is estimated to have been dead for about 24 hours before the body was found.

Neighbors say the little girl lived alone with her 41-year-old mother, and the father was out of the picture. They were aware that the mother suffered from health issues.

The Division of Child and Family Services took the little girl into custody and they're now trying to find a suitable family member who might be willing to take in the toddler. It was a terrible tragedy, but it could have ended up in two tragedies if not for King.

He's glad he was there to intervene.

“This is not a good part of Ogden—there’s a lot of weirdos around here, and I’m really, really fortunate and happy that I got to her, and nobody else did,” he said.

Sadly there are people who pass others in need every day. We keep our heads buried in our smartphones and turn a blind eye to the suffering going on around us.

King was in the right place at the right time, but it wasn’t just good timing that helped him save the little girl. He took an active interest in helping her, something not everyone does.
