Nigerian Woman Finally Flees Couple Who Kept Her As a Slave

Chudy Nsobundu, 56, and his wife Sandra, 50, are a Texas couple who face 60 years in prison and $1 million in fines for enslaving a Nigerian woman. On Monday, they were arrested and charged with forced labor, visa fraud, withholding documents and harboring conspiracy.

The victim, 38, had worked for the couple for a year in Nigeria. She was contacted by Sandra Nsobundu in 2012. She was asked to take care of the couple's five adopted children for $100 a month. When she arrived, it was a different story. The couple took away all of her possessions and her passport. She was forced to work from 5:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. every day.

During her work day, she wasn't allowed to sit or watch T.V. In addition, she was only allowed to eat their left over food. She even had to take only used cereal milk for her tea. If she put the wrong pair of socks on one of the children, she was beaten, denied medical care and access to fresh food and water.

The couple often called her "the idiot" and forced her to sleep on the floor with their two 3-year-olds because they say she was "too smelly" to sleep on a bed.

The victim called her bank in Nigeria in October 2015 to find out the couple had never paid her. Someone then contacted the National Human Trafficking Resource Center. The next month, she was able to leave the house of horrors with a caseworker from the YMCA International Trafficked Persons Assistance Program.
