Public High School Student Documents Rotten Food In School Cafeteria

The school lunch program is meant to ensure that millions of children across the nation who might not be able to afford food get at least one good meal per day. One student in Oklahoma, however, claims that the city is giving kids rotten food. He says that bad food is a common problem with the free lunch program, which is frustrating for those who rely on it.

The Oklahoma City Public Schools are taking advantage of a federal initiative. Instead of wasting time fighting students and parents over lunch bills, everyone's lunch is now free. It may sound like a great deal that solves some major problems for underprivileged youth and low-income families, but in reality, these free lunches are a bit of a slap in the face.

Malik McConnell is a student at Southeast High School, and he says that the food he's given is repeatedly of such poor quality that it's unappetizing. It's not uncommon for the food to have mold on it.

McConnell said a recent lunch he was given was a previously frozen peanut butter and jelly sandwich. “It was stuck together and it was wet, and I still ate it because I was hungry,” McConnell said.

“This has been going on all four years that I've been here. It's not an uncommon thing to find mold or raw chicken or straight up nastiness,” said Ilan Waller, another student at Southeast High School.

The students have posted photos of things they've gotten in the lunch line on social media, and the idea that taxpayer dollars are going to provide school children with rotten fruit and spoiled milk is outrageous. The students say they can't complain, either, because it's free. They're called ungrateful and told not to eat it if they don't like it.

“I get backlash from it. People saying, 'They're not forcing you to eat it.' Well it's not about me. It's about everybody because some kids are forced to eat it because that's their only food,” Waller said.

The high school denies that they're giving kids bad food. "We found no issues during the investigation, having verified that the temperature in milk coolers and our rotation processes are being followed and that our fruit, which is the highest quality fruit available on the market, is being inspected every day,” Beth Harrison, chief communications officer at Oklahoma City Public Schools.

Maybe adults working for the district should be forced to eat the same things that the students are eating. Perhaps then the quality of the food will suddenly become more of a priority with administrators and the superintendent. Until now, though, kids are going hungry because they can’t eat the things put on their tray. Free lunch or no free lunch, they’re not happy.

Waller says he ends up not eating, which is a problem. "At the end of the day, I'm starving because I have to go to practice after school and that lasts like three hours.”
