Reality Star Is Thankful Her Daughter Is Alive After Surgeons Used Dirty Scalpel

Vicki Gunvalson, one of the 'Real Housewives of Orange County' stars, seems to have it all: she's wealthy, runs a successful business, is attractive and stars on a reality television show. But even celebrities and wealthy people aren't immune to problems, as anyone who watches the 'Real Housewives' shows would know. Gunvalson explains that she faced a real potential tragedy recently when her daughter could have died from a botched surgery.

Gunvalson spoke to Access Hollywood and told them that her daughter, Briana Culberson, is lucky to be alive right now after surgeons in Oklahoma made a terrible mistake. The doctors operated on Culberson with a dirty scalpel.

"It almost killed my daughter," Gunvalson said. "[The scalpel was infected] with feces from a previous surgery that day they put inside her body. So, not good, she almost lost her leg. I mean, she almost died and all this stuff."

Culberson, her husband and children went home to Orange County to stay with her mother following the surgical procedure. The young woman made a full recovery with the help of doctors at Los Angeles' City of Hope. The mother of two had to be put on intravenous antibiotics for three weeks to recover from the ordeal.

"[They] got all of it out of her body," said Gunvalson, 55.

Culberson suffers from Lupus, an inflammatory disease that compromises the body's immune system. She undergoes chemotherapy every four to six weeks at UCLA Medical Center to combat the disease.

Gunvalson wanted to set the record straight about medical emergencies. Aside from what her daughter went through, a scandal rocked season 10 of 'RHOC' when Gunvalson's ex-boyfriend, Brooks Ayers, faked cancer. As it turns out, he didn't have the disease at all.

Ayers had gone as far as to falsify medical bills as part of his cover story to back up the lie. Gunvalson was devastated with the facts came out.

The reality star says she thinks that Ayers was villainized by the show. "I don't know why he did what he did, but he wasn't a monster. He wasn't really the man I thought he was if he did what he did to me," she told E! "We had a good thing going or so I thought, but why? I still don't know why. I have never been able to get the answer from him."

The Real Housewife is currently focusing on her relationship with women, though. Namely, with her co-stars. The housewives seem to be ever at odds, as a stream of never-ending drama seems to haunt the cast. The arguments, gossip, hissy fits and angry confrontations may be great for ratings, but it's really wearing on the relationship of the women.

“I am hopeful that we can all be friends again, because life is easier that way. Having all this conflict is not healthy for any of us,” said Gunvalson, who is hoping to repair the relationship with fellow Housewives Tamara Judge and Shannon Beador this season.
