If you search for a natural acne mask to make at home, you will find hundreds of recipies. But what makes for an effective natural acne mask?

In general, acne masks target excessive oil production, decrease inflammation, and aid in exfoliating blocked pores. A variety of ingredients can contribute to the desired effect, but all should be used with caution. Test any of the suggested masks on a small area of skin before applying to the entire face and avoid ingredients to which you have a known hypersensitivity.

Some popular ingredients you may find in recipies for a natural acne mask include baking soda, honey, peppermint, oatmeal, tomato clay, tea tree oil, aspirin, yogurt and egg whites. Baking soda, oatmeal, and clay are purported to reduce excess oil. Honey, yogurt, tomato, and aspirin exfoliate the skin and provide vitamins. Tea tree oil has antibacterial properties.

To use a natural acne mask, mix according to the instructions and apply for 5 to 20 minutes. Wash thouroughly with soap and water and the moisturize the skin.

Below are some recipies you can use as a natural acne mask:

  1. 1 tablespoon honey, pinch of cinnamon, 1 teaspoon baking soda and water to make a paste
  2. Cut a tomato in half and apply the juices. Leave on for 20 minutes.
  3. Mix mint leaves and cilantro 1:1 and blend in food processor to make a paste.
  4. Cook oatmeal according to package instructions and allow to cool. Mix 1/2 cup with 2 tablespoonsful of honey.
  5. Mix 1 cup bentonite clay with enough water to make a paste. Add 2 drops tea tree oil.
  6. Mix 1 egg white with the juice from 1/2 lemon.
  7. Crush 5 to 10 aspirin tablets and mix with water to make a paste. You can also mix this into plain yogurt for extra exfoliation.
