Study Suggests Red Wine Can Prevent Sunburn

wine

What could make a day at the beach more relaxing? Perhaps taking along a bottle red wine and calling it "sunscreen" would be a great start. While this may sound absurd, a recent study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry suggests that certain compounds found in red wine may have protective qualities that prevent sunburn.

According to researchers, compounds known as flavonoids are responsible for the benefit. These flavonoids seem to block harmful changes in skin cells that generally occur with exposure to UVA and UVB radiation. These types of radiation are known to cause sunburn, wrinkles, and skin cancer in unprotected skin.

The good news for those who choose not to drink is this: those same flavonoids that wine drinkers enjoy are also found in fresh grapes. Grapes are just as effective in preventing sun damage as wine.

So, does this mean you can toss out your bottle of sunscreen in favor of a few glasses of wine and a handful of grapes? Unfortunately, no, but this research is groundbreaking for those who develop skincare and sun protection products. After further research we are likely to see those flavonoids showing up in our favorite sunscreen lotions.
