Want to Lose Weight? Eat with Your Other Hand!

Want an easy way to cut calories? Change one little thing during that most notorious of diet killing activities – snack time.

According to a new study conducted at the University of Southern California, using your non-dominant hand while snacking could cut your consumption of these sugary, salty, or fat-laden foods by as much as 30%. All this means is, if you are right-handed, then use your left hand when junking out in front of the TV.

The study looked at 98 moviegoers eating popcorn in a dark movie theater. When they ate with their dominant hand, it didn't matter if the popcorn was fresh or a week old, they still ate most of it. When the participants were asked to eat with their non-dominant hand, while those who really enjoyed their fresh popcorn still ate the same amount, those with the stale snack seemed to actually notice what they were eating, and found that it wasn't worth the extra effort.

Because many evening snackers tend to cram chips or ice cream or cookies into their mouths without really noticing how much they are eating, or even what it tastes like, eating with the non-dominant hand could be instrumental in helping them realize just how much they are eating, and cut those junk food calories.
