Ladies: Cut out Sodas and Shrink that Waist!

Listen up, Ladies! If you're looking for a quick way to shrink that waistline (and really, aren't we all?) then pay attention!

According to results released this week from a new study from the University of Oklahoma, sugary drinks were strongly linked to expanding waistlines among the women studied.

Researchers looked at the drinking habits of 4000 participants, both men and women, and discovered that those women who drank two or more sweetened beverages on a daily basis were more likely to have larger waists – but the results were not there for men. Interestingly, there was no associated weight gain, only "waist gain."

As we have learned from the media, larger waistlines, the so-called "belly fat," is linked to increased cholesterol levels, risk of diabetes, and heart disease, even in those who are not overweight. Accordingly, the women in the study who drank two or more sugary beverages developed higher triglyceride levels and were more likely to develop diabetes over time.

So why women, and not men? According to the researchers, it could be because women naturally require fewer calories than men, so all those extra calories found in sweetened drinks build up more quickly and can cause more health problems.
