Exercise to Improve Sleep Quality

It's long been known that a certain amount of regular, moderate exercise is crucial for maintaining cardiovascular health, but recent research suggests that it may do more than that.

A new study published in Mental Health and Physical Activity included more than 3000 men and women of all ages who wore an accelerometer on their hip for one week and answered questions about their sleep habits, quality of sleep, and other health information.

Based upon the information obtained, it seems that those who manage to get at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise each week enjoy 65% better quality of sleep than those who don't get regular exercise. They also reported feeling more alert during the day, and fewer nighttime leg cramps.

Because poor sleep can cause inflammation – which leads to cardiovascular problems such as heart attack and stroke – perhaps a little extra exercise may be helping your heart in more ways than one.

If you don't currently participate in regular aerobic exercise, be sure and speak to your doctor before beginning a new workout routine. Yes, exercise is good for you, but you need to make sure you are healthy enough for the routine you are planning.
