Want to Avoid Alzheimer's? Eat More Fish!

Alzheimer's disease is one of the most-feared and least-understood conditions of old age. Once thought to be unpreventable, more and more research is now turning up that helps us solve the mystery of Alzheimer's, and teaches us how to reduce our risk.
In a new study presented today at the Radiological Society of North America's annual meeting, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine announced findings that eating broiled or baked fish at least once weekly actually affects the brain's structure.
According to the research, those who eat fish – prepared by broiling or baking, not fried – on a weekly basis show a larger amount of gray matter (that is, actual brain mass or size) in those areas of the brain involved in learning and memory. What's more, those folks with that larger brain size had their risk of developing Alzheimer's disease drop by an astounding five times in just a five-year time period.
But don't be misled – it's not that those 260 study participants began eating fish and saw their brains start to grow larger. It simply shows that those who regularly eat fish don't appear to show decreases in brain size that are common with Alzheimer's disease and other cognitive impairments.
