Junk Food Not Good for Sperm

Junk food can lower male fertility. A new study from the US and S[pain released this month shows that junk food, especially food with high trans fat content, can damage sperm in otherwise healthy young men.

Fertility experts from Harvard Medical School and the University of Murcia in southern Spain, took a peek at sperm from hundreds of young men aged 18 through 22. For those men whose diets consisted of a lot of junk and fast foods, they had lower quality sperm compared to the men who at more health consciously.

All the guys were in good health. They had no health or genetic issues that might influence the quality of their sperm. The junk food sperm failed on shelf life. They were less likely to survive inside the womb and couldn’t last long enough to go all the way and fertilize the egg. Researchers found that this was true even for the men who exercised regularly and had a fit weight – if they ate the junk, their swimmers sank.

Recently Japanese researchers did a similar study looking at the male exercise routing as a factor in male fertility. Their findings supported a healthy lifestyle. They found that men who only took a regular walk had better quality sperm than men who were sedentary.

These two studies combined tell us that men can do themselves, their partner and their future children a big favor by eating right and exercising. If you face an undiagnosed fertility issue, altering diet and including more exercise may be one way of helping the process.
