Don Pistos, North Beach

Don Pisto's is the best Mexican joint in North Beach. Amidst the yummy Italian restaurants is a gem of delicious tacos and ceviche. The restaurant opened a few years ago down the street from my house and has become a staple in my weekly dining out. You can get your dinner to-go or sit in their relaxed dining room complete with brick walls and heavy wooden tables. The rustic space makes it feel comfortable and the hip - hop music on the weekend gives it a fun atmosphere.

Don Pisto's is a fresh take on traditional Mexican street food, with inspiration from the border towns of Baja California to as far south as the Yucatan Peninsula. Even the chips and salsa are fantastic - they are lightly fried tortilla chips with a green salsa that is just spicy enough. Their guacamole is freshly made and topped with a sprinkle of onions - giving it that extra bite. One of my favorite dishes is the Carne Asada Tacos. They come two to an order, which is the perfect size, and have mesquite grilled steak, cilantro, onions and arbol salsa. The Puerto Nuevo Lobster is also great for two. The lobster is fresh and juicy and is accompanied by tortillas. It is also reasonably priced for a whole lobster.

Another fabulous menu item is their Sangria. It is a perfect blend of wine and fruit juice . In addition to their delicious sangria, they also serve up some great margarita -blended with the perfect amount of tequila and lime juice.

On Sunday's Don Pisto's has a scrumptious brunch complete with Huevos Rancheros and Chorizo & Poached Eggs. With their bottomless Sangria and "Agua Fresca" Mimosas it is a great way to spend a lazy Sunday with friends.
