Vacations Are Good for the Mind

Who doesn't need a vacation? We all do, but very few have time to take off work, or don't get vacation days, or will take a "working vacation". Well it seems that vacations aren't only great get-a-ways but are also healthy for the mind.
A "real vacation", one where the blackberry isn't on, emails are not being checked, is important to rejuvenate the brain and can actually make you better at work afterwards. Taking a break can help the mind to relax and gain perspective and to even become more creative. When you can detach yourself from your environment and work you are able to see a situation more clearly and come up with better ideas or solutions for it. Adam Galinsky, professor at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University states:
Not just taking time off from work, but actually getting away from where you live is really important, because that's the only way that you can achieve that perspective
Being away from your everyday life and city can also help you to learn more about yourself and have a new look on your life. Ellen Langer, professor of psychology at Harvard University says:
What people should do, I think, when they go on these vacations and experience the feeling of engagement, the feeling of being mindfully involved in your own life, is to find a way to bring that back to their workday
What it comes down to is that to be a better worker, more creative person, or to just feel like yourself you need a vacation; it is healthy for your mind and can give you the much needed break you deserve.
