Four Natural Ways To Reduce Ulcerative Colitis Flare-Ups and Manage Symptoms

Ulcerative colitis is a long-term inflammatory bowel disease that affects the large intestine. This disease causes inflammation, irritation, and ulcers in the colon and rectum. Ulcerative colitis also causes inflammation in other parts of the body, such as the liver, skin, eyes, spine, and joints. Presently, colitis affects close to one million Americans and the cause is currently unknown. And, Chron’s disease is closely associated with ulcerative colitis, as Chron’s causes inflammation of the intestines. Treatment for this disease may require both surgery and medications, though there are natural treatments that can help reduce flare-ups and manage symptoms.

Although medications may be necessary to treat your ulcerative colitis, there are natural ways to help lessen flare-ups and alleviate symptoms. Research studies show how effective natural remedies and lifestyle changes can be for ulcerative colitis, such as the following four ways:

1. Less stress is a key component to the alleviation of symptoms because when the body stresses it causes inflammation in the body. Research shows that stress plays a role in inflammatory bowel diseases. Although, there is no research that shows stress as a cause of ulcerative colitis it does show that stress exacerbates symptoms and flare-ups. There are many ways to counteract stress in your life such as mediation, deep breathing, yoga, and spending time in nature.

2. Probiotics have been shown to prolong remission and promote overall gut health. In 2019 a study showed that people who consumed probiotics regularly saw improvements in their colitis symptoms and an overall improvement in their quality of life. Probiotics are living microorganisms that help healthy bacteria flourish in your digestive tract which can help maintain remission and reduce inflammatory responses.

3. Exercise is a great way to reduce inflammation and manage complications associated with ulcerative colitis such as a weakened immune system, weight gain, stress, and decreased bone density. A study showed that moderate exercise helps with inflammatory bowel disease and promotes healing.

4. Increase iron intake under the supervision of a doctor in order to combat anemia due to blood loss in stool. This is common in people with ulcerative colitis but it can go untreated. Unfortunately, foods rich in iron tend to cause flare-ups so anemia can be prevalent in colitis patients. If you are feeling super fatigued talk to your doctor about iron supplementation.
