One Little Change Will Make A Big Difference To Your Sleep

Trying to 'get healthy' can feel overwhelming sometimes, but it doesn't have to be. You don't have to change everything about your life all at once-- just start with something small. One little thing you can do to make a big difference is to lower the thermostat at night.

Ideal Temperature

If you have been bundling up under blankets with the heater blasting to go to sleep, apparently you've been doing it wrong. Scientific research in the field of sleep is showing more and more reasons to keep cool at night. Ideal nighttime temperatures for sleeping are between 60 and 67 degrees, says Dr. Chris Winter of the Huffington Post. You'll cool down even better if you just sleep in the buff.

Benefits of Keeping Cool

Apparently, that electric blanket is not doing you any favors. People who sleep in cooler temperatures tend to fall asleep faster and more easily. A recent study by the American Diabetes Association shows that sleeping in cooler temperatures may lower the risks of diabetes and metabolic diseases.

Not ready to give up those insulated jammies yet? Consider this: people who sleep in cooler temperatures burn more calories. In addition, the cool night temperatures help your body releases anti-aging hormones that will keep you looking younger and fitter.

You’ll Adapt

Do you positively cringe at the idea of not blasting the heater? Does just the thought of stripping off the flannel and fleece make you shiver?

It’s okay—it may not be pleasant at first, but your body will adjust to cooler temperatures, and they can really pay off in the long run. Just chalk it up as another minor sacrifice for a healthy lifestyle.
