Creating Your Bedroom Sanctuary: Decor Do's and Don'ts

There are a lot of things that you should consider when decorating your home, but one of the most important areas that you should think about is your bedroom. Many people neglect to even give a thought to the décor in their bedrooms because they think that it’s not really relevant, when in fact it is.

Your bedroom is important because that is your sanctuary. That is the place that you will go at the end of the day and relax. You nap there, you hang out there, you sleep there, and so it needs to be the most relaxing room in your house. What should you take into consideration when decorating your bedroom?

First, you should make sure that the colors fit the room. Certain colors, such as reds and yellows, will make your bedroom have way too much energy, which can eliminate the “relaxing” aspect that you want for the room. Many interior decorators suggest that you use neutral colors and warm tones. The bedroom is a good place for greens, blues, light purples, and lighter shades of red.

Then, fill your bedroom with things that you like. Make sure the floor is a material that you like, because if you don’t, you could end up having cold feet pretty frequently. Do you like using lamps instead of the overhead light? What colors do you like? What about knickknacks and furniture? Don’t clutter your room up too much though; make sure there’s enough space for you to get around in the dark if you have to wake up.

There are some things that you shouldn’t have in your bedroom if you can help it (in some cases, like with an apartment, you really can’t). You shouldn’t have many electronics in there – using your bedroom as a computer room could really kill the atmosphere that you want for your room. Keep it simple and distraction-free – the distractions can sit in other rooms of your home.

Lastly, let’s look at the bed. Your bed should be the best part of your bedroom. Don’t be afraid or ashamed of splurging on a comfortable bed, because that’s where you are sleeping every night. Pick a bed that’s right for you and your spouse (if applicable) and you’ll definitely enjoy being in your bedroom much more.

If you take these considerations into account when you are decorating your bedroom, you will end up being much better for it in the end. Make sure your bedroom is your oasis, and you will not regret it for one moment.
