Designing with Your Partner: How To Keep The Peace

You have finally made the mutual decision with your partner to take the next step in your relationship and move in together. If you are anything like me, you are super excited to finally start designing and decorating your new home together that symbolizes your love for your partner and all your happy memories. Moving in together is a big step for every relationship because it means that everything can change. It is one thing to be in a relationship and live separately and a completely new thing to be in a relationship and live together. From my personal experience, you must be open and honest with your partner when it comes to moving in together and decorating your new home in a way that seems fit for the both of you.

Be Very Organized

Once you have found your “together” home, you must be very organized about what your plans are. Make lists about what colors you like for the walls, what themes you like in certain rooms, and what décor you are both attracted to. Before you buy anything for your new home, you should have a conversation and write down everything that you both want to see in your new home. Without organization, designing with your partner can become very stressful.

Focus on the Positive Instead of the Negative

In any relationship, I am sure you will both have different opinions about decorating. Instead of getting frustrated because your partner wants a black tile floor and you want a white tile floor, focus on the positive aspect; you both want tile floors. If you can focus on what you do want together and not focus on what you do not want, decorating your first home can be much easier and less of a hassle. Decorating a home is already stressful enough and arguing over your disagreements only makes the experience less fun that what it should be.

Focus on Your Relationship

Adding different items or memories to your home together gives you something fun to do remembering your best times. If you have recently become engaged at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, include Eiffel Tower status or pictures along with a French theme to your home to keep that memory alive. If you had your first date at an ice cream parlor and the walls were painted blue and green, incorporate those colors in a section of your home so you can always remember the first time you spent together as a couple. If you are a young couple, focus on bright colors to symbolize your love for life and joyfulness. If you are an older couple, focus on items or colors that help you remember how in love you really are.

Decorating your first house with the love of your life is definitely a fun experience if done the right way. Always remember that you need to always focus on the positive instead of the negative and things will go much easier. Have fun!
