Tips For Designing Your Child’s Bedroom

Designing your child’s home can be a fun and rewarding task. Your children are the most important people in your life and you want to be sure that they get to enjoy a relaxing, exciting, and safe bedroom, so keep these tips in mind when embarking on such a project.

Design according to their age. You will design a bit differently depending on the age of your child. If your child is a toddler, you want the room to be childproof and fun. Toddlers probably won’t spend a lot of time in their rooms alone, so you don’t have to go all out, but make it appealing for the toddler. Have bright colors and add fun toys to the room. Adding a toy box full of exciting toys is a great idea! Elementary children will begin spending more time in their rooms alone, so design with that in mind. As they enter school, they might enjoy a desk in their room to sit at to do homework. A toy box and some shelves will suit them well for all of their toys, books, etc. Teenagers normally love to spend time in their room, so allow them to have an input as to whether to have a desk, television, and chair for friends to sit in.

Color. Your color choices are almost endless. Many parents like to paint toddlers rooms bright colors, as it gives off a very happy vibe and seems to stimulate children. Once your child reaches school age, he or she is well able to help you decide what color he would like for his bedroom. The color will depend on what type of theme you are going for, the sex of the child, and personal preference. Boys tend to like the blues and greys and girls tend to like to pinks, purples, and bright colors. There really is no wrong color choice!

Lighting. You probably want your child’s room to have plenty of lighting in it. You can have one or two lights on the ceiling and a lamp on the nightstand, as this seems to fit most children’s bedrooms. If you plan on putting a desk in the room, a little desk lamp is suitable as well. If you have plenty of windows in the room, your need for artificial light will be less than if there is only one window.

Accessories. You can decorate your child’s room with decorative items like knick-knacks, stuffed animals, pictures for the wall, decorative pillows, clothing hooks, and more. Consider putting shelves up or a bookcase to hold things like trophies, dolls, collectibles, books, etc. Try not to over-accessorize with such things or with furniture or the room will look cluttered.

Storage. Children like to accumulate things and often do when it comes to birthday and holiday presents, so storage is important when designing a child’s room. Utilize the closet well and purchase some stackable storage bins. Bins come in all sorts of colors and can add pizazz to a room. Toy chests are wonderful places to store the toys and large dressers work well for clothes.

As you and your children design the bedroom, allow his or her personality to show and accentuate their personalities. It can be an exciting and rewarding experience for all of you!
